Ethereum Developers Mark July 2020 as the ETH 2.0 Launch Date with '95% Confidence'

Ethereum's next system-wide update, ETH 2.0, will not launch in Q2 2020 as previously expected, but researchers remain hopeful that the initial network parameters will deploy this year.

In a Reddit discussion held on Wednesday 5th February, the ETH 2.0 team mentioned that the network won't be launching until three clients can run testnets consistently for a minimum of 8 weeks. Participants of the AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread included Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and ETH 2.0 researches Justin Drake and Danny Ryan.

ETH 2.0, the next iteration of the world's leading smart-contract blockchain, promises larger transaction throughput and a brand-new security model under Proof-of-Stake (PoS).

Dubbed 'Serenity', ETH 2.0 has been in development since Ethereum's launch back in 2015, but has been very slow to get off the ground due to the highly technical nature of the endeavour.

The launch for ETH 2.0 was first noted to arrive in January 2020, and later a vaguer 'Q2 2020' was banded around. Developers are now looking to the network's 5th anniversary, July 3030 2020, for the full launch.

At the time of Ethereum's debut in 2015, the Parity client launched after Geth, leading to the validator set swinging disproportionately towards the latter client at an 80-20 shift, according to Drake. 'Parity never manager to catch up with Geth', he added.

Regardless of the launch date, Phase 0 and Phase 1 are 99% and 90% complete, respectively.
