Kate Winslet to act in Hollywood flick about Ethereum scam

The Academy Award winner Kate Winslet will reportedly be starring in an upcoming Hollywood movie picturing the rise and fall of a famous Ethereum-based Ponzi scheme, OneCoin.

The film, called Fake! is based on the true-life story of Jen McAdam and her engagement in the OneCoin Ponzi scheme. As per the entertainment website Deadline, the book will be featured in this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair.

McAdam, who invested and lost close to $300K in the scam, founded a support group for all of those affected.

Fake! will be written and directed by Scott Z. Burns, also known for the 2019 political drama The Report. This film will be the second team-up for Burns and Winslet, who had earlier collaborated in Contagion (2011), a movie on a pandemic that grips Earth.

The notorious OneCoin crypto scam was committed by the Bulgarians Ruja Ignatova and Sebastian Greenwood. The due had offices in Belize and Dubai, and Ignatova has allegedly embezzled billions of dollars before disappearing.

The official court document disclosed that Ignatova had help from Mark Scott, a partner at international law firm Locke Lord, in laundering over $400 million. Scott has been released from a federal prison in New York in 2018 and is now awaiting trial under house arrest.

Fake! is among the first crypto-centric flicks featuring one of the most prominent Hollywood stars. Another similar motion picture was Crypto, a 2019 film with Liam Hemsworth telling about money laundering via cryptocurrencies.
