Pandemic brings a surge in blockchain gaming

Since the coronavirus pandemic outbreak at the beginning of this year, there has been a surge in gaming platform traffic.

The cell network company Verizon stated that online gaming platforms have seen an overall 20% increase in streaming across the web and an over 75% spike in traffic. And blockchain games are no exception.

According to the most recent reports, Microsoft Azure, which provides developers the means to manage blockchain networks for applications such as Xbox, recorded the highest levels of latency ever on its network due to quarantined gamers crowding the Xbox app.

Other not so mainstream platforms are gaining more users' interest as well. The players of a blockchain game War Riders, where they get to build and crash cars in Mad Max-style, have augmented the average time spent in the game considerably. The number of players is said to have jumped up to 70%.

Sebastien Borget, the co-founder and COO of TSB Gaming, observed that the decentralized virtual worlds of such blockchain games are experiencing an influx of new users as they are meeting and socializing in a collective virtual shared space, engaging in various events and even festivals.

“I think this is great and hosting events and providing activities to do for gamers inside the metaverse is the right way to go", Borget says

The co-founder and lead developer at Neblio, Edward Smith is pretty sure that gaming, including blockchain-based games, and entertainment will gain out of this ongoing worldwide crisis the most. According to Smith, the blockchain integration into esports will only grow with time, and it's a win-win situation for both industries as gamers are one of the most passionate blockchain users.

Most industry watchers agree that as developers are now leaning more toward play-to-earn gaming models, the interest toward blockchain-based games will continue growing respectively. In fact, this has been the case with well-known blockchain games like Gods Unchained and CryptoKitties. These types of games offer a great alternative to make some money while engaging in a game and simply having a good time.

Gaming business can contribute to the blockchain technology's mass adoption by providing a user-friendly space, while the technology can be handy to the gaming world through its open-source, transparent and decentralized nature.
